Renewable Energy Capacity Targets
Energy Minister Parviz Shahbazov spoke at the High-Level Public-Private Dialogue 'Building momentum towards a 100% Renewable energy system' within the 14th session of the IRENA Assembly. He highlighted the consensus reached in the UAE on a just transition away from fossil fuels and the agreement to triple renewable energy potential by 2030.
Azerbaijan, hosting COP29, intends to support green energy and climate goals nationally and globally. The Minister stated: 'In the first phase of our onshore and offshore green energy plans, decarbonization of the economy and export, we aim to realize 2 GW by 2027, and in the next phase - more than 8 GW of green energy capacities by 2030.'
"This promises to double the renewable energy potential through Azerbaijan by 2027 and to quadruple by 2030. These projects, which increase the share of renewable energy in the installed capacity of electricity in our country by 3% more than the initial target figure and 3 years earlier to 33%, will also be the sources of increasing the potential of renewable energy in European countries."
Key Highlights
- 6.5 GW target capacity by 2030: Aims to significantly boost installed capacity.
- 1.5 GW+ new capacity by 2027: Initial phase focusing on immediate projects.
- ~30% installed capacity from RES: Expected to reach 33% by 2027.
- Major projects: Includes large-scale solar and wind plants, and hydro augmentation.
